A Japanese blockbuster is storming its way to the top of the North American box office charts in its opening weekend. Godzilla Minus Zero, a sequel to last year's Oscar-winning film, has taken control of 3,254 theaters and is on track to rake in an estimated $32 million.

The movie kicked off its run with a strong performance on Friday, earning $14.5 million including Thursday previews. This impressive start sets it up for what could be the highest-grossing live-action foreign-language opening since Hero debuted with $17.8 million back in 2004.

Godzilla Minus Zero is being touted as one of the most successful international films to hit US theaters in recent years, outperforming its distributor's projected mid-$20 million opening. The film has also garnered an A CinemaScore from audiences, indicating a strong reception among viewers.

The movie's success can be attributed in part to its gripping storyline, which explores postwar Japan as it faces threats from the three-headed Ghidorah and the possibility of Godzilla's return. With a reported budget in the mid-teens, Godzilla Minus Zero is shaping up to be a lucrative venture for its producers.

Godzilla Minus Zero has received widespread critical acclaim, with 90 percent of critics giving it a positive review on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's thrilling action sequences have been praised by reviewers, who are hailing it as a "thrilling jolt of marauding monster action."

As the weekend comes to a close, Godzilla Minus Zero is set to take the top spot at the box office, leaving other new releases in its wake. Including 'The Cat in the Hat', 'Ramayana', 'Wild Horse Nine' and 'Club Kid', these films are also vying for attention from audiences.

Godzilla Minus Zero is making an even bigger splash than its predecessor, Godzilla Minus One, which opened in December 2023 to $11.4 million domestically and eventually grossed $57.1 million in the domestic market, with a further $56.9 million internationally.

Warner Bros.' animated take on Dr. Seuss's classic children's book is also making waves, with The Cat in the Hat raking in $6 million from 4,003 North American locations on Friday, including Thursday previews. The film is expected to gross around $18 million for its opening frame, surpassing initial projections of a $20 million debut.

The studio behind The Cat in the Hat had high hopes for the film, which boasts an A CinemaScore and was made with a budget of $92 million. Warner Bros. Pictures Animation's first title since Bill Damaschke took over as president and chief creative officer in 2023 is centered on a feline being given one final chance to prove his worth by helping a pair of siblings.

The film's voice cast includes Bill Hader, Matt Berry, Quinta Brunson, and Xochitl Gomez, but critics have been lukewarm in their response. The movie holds a 45 percent Rotten Tomatoes score from reviewers, with some finding it more taxing than enjoyable.

In contrast to the live-action adaptation of The Cat in the Hat starring Mike Myers, which opened to $38.3 million domestically and went on to gross $101 million in North America against a budget of $109 million, Warner Bros.' animated take is receiving slightly better reviews.

The success of Godzilla Minus Zero and The Cat in the Hat highlights a crowded market with several other films vying for attention from audiences, including 'Ramayana', 'Wild Horse Nine' and 'Club Kid'.

The release of Prime Focus Studios' Ramayana: Rise of a Legend in 1,433 North American locations is generating significant buzz, having already grossed $2.4 million on its opening Friday. The film's domestic launch is the widest ever for an Indian movie, with a budget reportedly exceeding $420 million.

The movie, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, has received mixed reviews from critics, earning a 76 score on Rotten Tomatoes. However, audiences are more enthusiastic, giving it an 89 approval rating. With its impressive box office numbers and grand scale production, Ramayana: Rise of a Legend is set to become one of the year's most notable releases.
