Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed optimism about the upcoming talks in Abu Dhabi, which are being mediated by the United States. The discussions aim to bring an end to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The talks, set for November 10 and 11, will be at the adviser level, but Zelenskyy is hopeful that they can pave the way for a meeting between leaders from all three countries. This would include Russian President Vladimir Putin, whom Zelenskyy has been trying to engage in direct negotiations.

Zelenskyy made these comments during a visit to Berlin, where he met with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. The Ukrainian president emphasized that the talks are part of a broader effort to end the war through diplomacy.

The US has announced a new round of talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the US, which will focus on key issues including post-war security arrangements and de-escalation efforts.

A Russian delegation is set to attend the talks, led by former Culture Minister Vladimir Medinsky, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. This follows a recent display of cooperation between the warring sides, with human rights ombudsmen from Russia and Ukraine working together to evacuate residents and deliver aid in the Ukrainian city of Oleshky.

The mission to evacuate residents and deliver aid was facilitated by US First Lady Melania Trump, marking one of the most notable instances of cooperation since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. The talks in Abu Dhabi are seen as a significant development, building on recent efforts to find common ground between Russia and Ukraine.

The meeting is being viewed as a positive step forward, with both sides expressing optimism about its potential outcome.

The Abu Dhabi talks have sparked questions about Europe's level of involvement in the negotiations.

A journalist pointed out the seeming contradiction between Ukraine being aligned with Europe on one hand and Europe not participating directly in the talks on the other.

This issue appears to be a sensitive topic, according to Kane, who noted that there was little response from those present when it was raised.

The fact that European governments have insisted on being part of the negotiations but will not be attending the Abu Dhabi meeting suggests that this is indeed a contentious point.

A separate meeting in Brussels is scheduled to take place this week where US envoys will discuss security guarantees for Ukraine and Europe's post-war security architecture with representatives from major European countries and NATO.

The participants in this meeting include officials from Germany, France, the UK, as well as the European Union itself.

Ukraine is seeking additional financial support from European countries, with President Zelenskyy having specifically requested an extra 70 billion euros next year.

Kane noted that successive German governments have been committed to supporting Ukraine's efforts against Russian attacks.

The economic struggles faced by many Germans have become a pressing concern ahead of elections, according to Kane. This issue has created an opportunity for parties opposed to funding Ukraine, such as the far-right Alternative for Germany and the left-wing Die Linke, to gain support among voters.

These parties have been gaining momentum in polls and election results, partly due to their stance on Ukraine-related issues. Meanwhile, global leaders are preparing to meet at various forums. The APEC summit in Shenzhen, China, is scheduled to take place from November 18 to 19, where US President Donald Trump, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and Russian President Putin may engage in three-way talks.

The upcoming meetings will also see the Coalition of the Willing gathering in Berlin around the same time. The G20 summit in Florida from December 13 to 15 remains uncertain regarding Putin's attendance, marking a significant moment since Russia's invasion began.
