Elon Musk has intensified his criticism of Indian business magnate Mukesh Ambani over delays to SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service launch in the country.

Musk took aim at Ambani on social media platform X, where he referred to the Reliance Industries chairman as India's "prime minister, suggesting that he wields significant influence over the government. The comment was made in a series of posts on Friday, where Musk argued that Starlink could bring much-needed internet access to rural areas and help small businesses reach customers worldwide.

The SpaceX chief executive questioned whether Ambani would allow Starlink to compete with his own telecom arm, Reliance Jio, which has a dominant market share in India. In a separate post, Musk asked if Ambani was the real boss of India, implying that he holds sway over the country's government and regulatory bodies.

Musk's latest comments follow accusations earlier this week that unnamed oligarchs" were blocking Starlink's launch to protect their business interests. However, India's Ministry of Communications has rejected these claims, stating that its regulatory framework for satellite communications is fair and non-discriminatory.

Despite years of efforts to launch its satellite internet service Starlink in India, SpaceX has yet to receive the necessary approvals from New Delhi. The company had previously secured distribution agreements with Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel, two major telecom operators in India, to offer Starlink services once regulatory clearances were obtained.

However, the Indian Ministry of Communications has stated that Starlink, along with two other licensed satellite operators, is undergoing security assessments before it can receive satellite spectrum. According to the ministry, all three companies are at a similar stage in the regulatory process, contradicting claims by SpaceX that its service was being singled out for unfair treatment.

In addition to Starlink, both Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel are also working on launching their own satellite internet services in India. Jio has partnered with Luxembourg-based SES to offer satellite connectivity, while Airtel is a major shareholder in Eutelsat OneWeb, which aims to provide similar services in the country.

India's vast market of over a billion internet users makes it an attractive target for companies like SpaceX, but expanding there also requires navigating complex relationships between powerful business figures and government officials.

The ongoing dispute between Elon Musk's Starlink and Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Jio has taken a new turn, with Musk intensifying his attack on Ambani over the delay in launching Starlink services in India.

Tesla, another company led by Musk, has faced its own challenges expanding in India. The electric carmaker registered just 699 vehicles in its first year of deliveries in the country, despite launching there last year after years of anticipation. Import duties have pushed the price of Tesla's Model Y in India to nearly double its US price, making it considerably more expensive than in the US.

The disagreement between Starlink and Reliance Jio is not new. The two companies had previously clashed over how to allocate satellite spectrum in India, with Starlink advocating for an administrative process and Jio pushing for an auction. Ultimately, the Indian government decided to allocate the spectrum administratively.

Despite the controversy surrounding its launch, Starlink's services remain on hold in India. In response to Musk's allegations, the country's telecom minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, stated that India does not allow monopolies in any sector.

India's telecom minister has dismissed Elon Musk's claims that billionaire businessman Mukesh Ambani is blocking Starlink India's launch due to personal animosity.

The minister stated that India does not allow monopolies in any sector and that companies must operate within the country's laws and regulations. This response comes as Musk continues to publicly criticize Ambani, accusing him of using his business empire to stifle competition and innovation. The feud between the two billionaires has been ongoing for some time.

The issue remains unresolved, with Starlink India still waiting for regulatory approval before it can begin operations in the country.
