The West Indies cricket team has made history by achieving their highest run chase in one-day international (ODI) cricket, surpassing a target of 351 runs set by India in Chandigarh.
In a thrilling match that saw India's Lokesh Rahul score 129 not out, the West Indies chased down the total with five wickets remaining and 10 balls to spare. The Indian team had already secured the three-match series after winning the first two matches in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati.
The West Indies' victory marks their first win against India since 2023, ending a drought that had lasted for several years. Captain Shai Hope played a crucial role in the match, scoring his second successive century in the series and leading his team to victory.
Hope's innings was remarkable, as he promoted himself to open after Jewel Andrew suffered an injury while making a catch, forcing him to be taken to hospital. Despite struggling in the final overs, Hope batted brilliantly throughout the match, hitting 17 boundaries and three sixes from 143 balls.
Hope's experience in chasing big totals on Indian pitches proved to be a decisive factor in West Indies' record chase. The right-hander cited the favorable conditions as a reason why his team was able to overcome India's strong bowling attack.
The second-wicket partnership between Hope and Jangoo was particularly noteworthy, as they put on 109 runs off just 99 balls. This impressive stand helped deflect attention from the Indian bowlers, who had brought back Mohammed Siraj and Nitish Reddy for this match, along with debutant Anshul Kamboj.
The loss of Jangoo in the 21st over was a minor setback, but Sherfane Rutherford quickly took up the mantle. He put on 56 runs with Hope, who reached his half-century off just 46 balls and his century off 104 deliveries. This was the West Indies opener's fifth ODI hundred against India.
In the final overs, Hope accelerated to great effect, hitting seven more fours and two sixes after reaching his milestone. He and Gudakesh Motie (19 not out) added 62 runs off just 29 balls for the sixth wicket, ultimately securing West Indies' record-breaking victory.
India's batting woes continued as they lost their top two batsmen early on, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli falling to Jayden Seales for a duck each.
The hosts struggled to find momentum in the early overs, managing only 28 runs in the first 10 overs before Rohit Sharma began to rebuild the innings. He shared a crucial partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who scored 57 off 69 balls.
Sharma played a patient innings of 92 off 85 balls, but was eventually caught out by Paul in the 25th over, missing out on a second consecutive century in the series. His partnership with Gaikwad had added 137 runs to India's total.
India's late charge was led by KL Rahul, who scored 129 not out off just 87 balls, hitting six sixes and 10 fours in the process, helping his team surpass 350 runs.
