Tom Morello was honored by the Songwriters of North America (SONA) at their annual awards show in Los Angeles on Thursday. The event celebrated the contributions of songwriters who often go unrecognized for their work behind the scenes. Morello received SONA's first-ever Freedom of Expression Warrior Award, recognizing his dedication to First Amendment rights.

Morello was introduced by Shepard Fairey, the artist behind the iconic "Hope poster featuring Barack Obama. In a speech that began with thanks to the event's service workers, Morello highlighted the importance of music in social movements throughout history. He noted how a powerful soundtrack has often accompanied major protests and uprisings.

The SONA awards also recognized other notable figures in the industry, including Annie Lennox and Desmond Child. The organization honored Kobalt Music CEO Laurent Hubert as well as the songwriters behind KPop Demon Hunters. These honorees were acknowledged for their work in shaping the music landscape despite often receiving little recognition for their efforts.

The event aimed to bring attention to pressing issues affecting the music industry, including censorship, copyright law, and the impact of artificial intelligence on creativity. The SONA awards serve as a platform to celebrate the contributions of songwriters while addressing the challenges they face.

The tradition of protest music has a long history, with iconic songs like We Shall Overcome and Jimi Hendrix's rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner playing significant roles in various social movements.

These anthems have inspired generations to take action, as Tom Morello noted during his acceptance speech at the 2026 SONA Awards. He highlighted how Joe Hill's union songs helped galvanize support for workers' rights and how Rage Against The Machine's music was used in protests against authoritarian regimes.

Morello emphasized that he has always sought to create music that fuels discontent and inspires change, combining harmonies with rebellion and poetry with politics. When protest music is done effectively, it can evoke a new world emerging through its lyrics.

Hubert, the SONA executive of the year, also took the stage to address the gathering, cautioning songwriters and publishers about the growing presence of AI in their industry. While acknowledging that AI's arrival cannot be delayed, he assured them that authenticity will always prevail over technological advancements.

Morello concluded his speech by reaffirming his commitment to exercising his First Amendment rights, dismissing any suggestions that he should limit himself to playing music without speaking out on social issues.

The 2026 SONA Awards ceremony honored several notable songwriters in the industry, including four members of the KPop Demon Hunters team who received the Global Impact Award for their work on various projects.

Melanie Fontana, Lindgren, Danny Chung, and Daniel Rojas were among those recognized by the award, which is given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the music world globally. Their presence at the ceremony was a testament to their dedication to creating impactful music that resonates with audiences worldwide.

Meanwhile, Chris Redding was presented with the Emerging Songwriter award for his promising work in the industry. This honor acknowledges talented songwriters who are just starting to make a name for themselves and have shown great potential in producing innovative and engaging songs.

Child, a renowned songwriter behind classic hits like I Was Made For Loving You," "Livin' on a Prayer," and "Livin' La Vida Loca, received the Warrior Award. Introduced by Paul Stanley of KISS and Andreas Carlsson, Child was praised for his contributions to the music world.

In his acceptance speech, Child emphasized the importance of protecting songwriters' rights and called on the industry to continue fighting against copyright infringement. He also urged fellow songwriters to keep creating music that inspires and informs, using their craft as a force for good in an increasingly dark world.

Annie Lennox wrapped up her hosting duties at the 2026 SONA Awards by taking the stage for a performance of the Eurythmics' iconic hit Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)". She was joined by co-hosts Bonnie McKee and Shane Stevens, adding to the already electric atmosphere.

Lennox also addressed the topic of AI in her speech, emphasizing that human creativity should not be outsourced or replaced. In a call to action, she urged fellow artists to prioritize their unique experiences and perspectives as creative beings, highlighting the importance of protecting this aspect of humanity for future generations.
