Luca Guadagnino's "Artificial" Entered into Golden Globes Musical/Comedy Categories
The film, previously considered in the drama category, is now competing for Best Picture and will feature Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbara in supporting categories.

The Golden Globes submission deadline has passed, and one of the last remaining categorization questions has been answered. According to exclusive information obtained by noti.group, Luca Guadagnino's film "Artificial has been entered into consideration in the musical/comedy categories.
Neon submitted the film for Globes consideration, a move that was made just ahead of the submission deadline. The film, which explores the rise of artificial intelligence, had previously been dropped by Amazon/MGM, reportedly due to concerns about angering tech industry figures portrayed in the movie.
The decision to enter Artificial into the musical/comedy categories means it will compete against other films for Best Picture. Other contenders in this category include Wild Horse Nine", "The Invite, and several others.
The move also shifts Artificial's status from a drama contender, where it was previously considered alongside films such as The Odyssey". The film's submission has generated significant interest ahead of the Golden Globes ceremony.
The reclassification of Artificial from a drama to a comedy has significant implications for the Golden Globes competition.
The best actor category will now feature a mix of established stars and newcomers, with Yura Borisov's portrayal of Ilya Sutskever pitted against seasoned actors like John Malkovich and Ryan Gosling. This shift in classification will likely change the dynamics of the race, as some actors who were previously considered contenders may no longer be in the running.
Andrew Scott, Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Anthony Ippolito, Sebastian Stan, and John Turturro are among those who have been disqualified from competing in this category due to the film's reclassification.
The strongest awards prospect for Artificial is likely Andrew Garfield, who delivers a standout performance as Altman, and will now compete in the supporting actor category.
Monica Barbara also shines in the film as OpenAI chief technology officer Mira Murati, earning her a spot in the best supporting actress competition.
Artificial's humor credentials have been bolstered by its writer, Simon Rich, a well-known humorist from The New Yorker, who has also contributed to Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons. Rich's comedic touch is evident in the film's portrayal of prominent figures, including Ilya Sutskever's eccentricities on screen.
The comedy credentials of Artificial are further underscored by its reception at screenings, where audiences have reportedly laughed out loud at certain scenes featuring Sutskever and Ike Barinholtz as Elon Musk. These comedic elements add to the film's case for being classified as a comedy rather than a drama.
The 84th Golden Globe Awards will take place on January 10, 2027, with Artificial vying for recognition in a comedy category alongside other notable submissions, including Obsession which has been entered as a musical/comedy.
