A mass shooting in Krakow, Poland has left six people dead and 15 others injured. The attack occurred on Saturday near the city's Main Market Square, where a gunman opened fire at random, targeting innocent bystanders.

The two police officers who attempted to subdue the perpetrator were also shot during the incident. Fortunately, they survived the ordeal and have since emerged from comas, with the prime minister praising them as "true heroes for preventing further deaths.

A British national and an Austrian woman were among those killed in the attack, alongside four Polish citizens. The investigation into the shooting has been launched as a terror probe after ministers suggested that the 24-year-old Polish gunman was motivated by far-right ideologies.

The gunman remains in critical condition, while Professor Michal Pędziwiatr and Dr Mateusz Wierdak, two surgeons who were having lunch nearby with their families, sprang into action to treat the victims.

Professor Pędziwiatr recounted how his son alerted him to the shooting, saying Suddenly my son ran up and said: 'Dad, they're shooting at people there, people are falling to the ground'".

A colleague of the surgeon who saved the police officer's life described his actions as crucial to preventing further harm. The colleague stated that the officer would likely not have survived without the timely intervention of Wierdak, who applied makeshift bandages to stop the bleeding.

The police officer was shot in the chest during a gunfight with the attacker. Emergency services were delayed due to the remote location of the incident, and it is believed that the prolonged wait could have had disastrous consequences for the officer's chances of survival.

In an effort to expedite medical attention, Pędziwiatr contacted John Paul II Hospital, where he serves as head of General, Oncological, Metabolic and Emergency Surgery. He insisted that the police officer be taken there because of its specialized thoracic and cardiac surgery department.

Local media has identified Wierdak as a renowned surgeon in Krakow, with a reputation for expertise in complex medical procedures.

Local media has confirmed that six volunteers from Dublin's Civil Defence were in Krakow for a city break when the shooting occurred near the main square. They happened to be in close proximity to the scene of the attack and quickly sprang into action.

According to an officer who was involved, these trained medical responders provided critical care to those injured during the shooting. Their efforts included administering CPR and controlling haemorrhaging, a testament to their training and professionalism.

Witnesses described chaotic scenes as people scrambled for safety. Ruby Catherine Warren from London recalled hearing gunfire and immediately urging her friends to flee, leading them all to sprint for cover until they found refuge in a nearby hotel.

Meanwhile, Tom Brook from West Yorkshire was inside a McDonald's near the square when he heard multiple gunshots and saw others running for shelter. He then walked into the square where he observed paramedics tending to an injured individual while another body lay nearby, covered in foil blankets.

The investigation into the shooting rampage in Krakow's historic centre is ongoing, with Poland's Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński suggesting that the suspect was motivated by far-right ideologies and ultra-nationalist views.

Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the attacker's vehicle sped through the city, shattering glass fronts of shops and hitting a tram with gunfire. The rampage lasted for approximately three minutes, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Footage captured the moment people fled in terror as the sound of gunfire echoed through the streets.

The mayor of Krakow has submitted an urgent request to award honorary citizenship titles to the two police officers who were injured while stopping the attacker. Main Market Square was reopened on Sunday evening after a security cordon was lifted, bringing some sense of normalcy back to the city.
