A new documentary is set to shine a light on the intense and demanding world of elite figure skating. Up Again, directed by Czech filmmaker Eliška Andršová Cílková, follows the journey of Barbora Vránková, a three-time Czech national champion, as she trains with Europe's top skaters in Italy.

The film captures a pivotal period in Vránková's life between the ages of 15 and 18, during which time she is striving to become European, possibly even world, champion. The documentary offers an intimate glimpse into the daily routine of these elite athletes, who dedicate themselves to rigorous training sessions every day.

Up Again will premiere at the hlava International Documentary Film Festival on October 24, where it will be featured in both the First Lights and Czech Joy Competition sections. Following its festival run, the film will be released in Czech cinemas on October 29 through Pilot Film and nutprodukce.

The observational documentary Up Again offers a rare glimpse into the world of elite figure skating, where athletes are constantly measured by their performance, scores, and rankings. A fragile and intimate look behind the scenes is promised, giving audiences a unique perspective on this often secretive sport.

Director Andršová Cílková, who has previously worked on short films such as From Close-Up to Wide Shot and Pripyat Piano, brings her personal experience to the project. She started figure skating at the age of thirteen, well past the typical starting point for elite competitors, allowing her to approach the sport with a sense of joy rather than intense competition.

Cílková's own experiences on the ice have influenced the way she made the film, and she notes that from an audience member's perspective, figure skating appears effortless. However, this is not always the case, as evidenced by the precise movements described in the film's promotional materials, "spinning, pirouette, loop".

The world of elite figure skating is often shrouded in mystery, but a new film promises to lift the curtain on what it takes to be among the best. The documentary-style drama "Up Again" offers an intimate look at the lives of top skaters, delving into their dedication and struggles.

The film's production team includes several key players: Lukáš Kokeš for nutprodukce, Hanka Kastelicová and Tereza Bóna Keilová for HBO Europe, and Lenka Medová and Tomáš Šimon for Studio FAMU. The project was supported by the Czech Audiovisual Fund and Creative Europe MEDIA, providing a unique perspective on the world of elite figure skating.
