Renowned filmmaker Curry Barker is revisiting his YouTube horror roots with the release of Mama Bear, a chilling five-minute short film that coincides perfectly with the spooky season of Halloween.

Barker has collaborated with creative partner Cooper Tomlinson on the That's a Bad Idea YouTube channel, and this new project marks a return to his horror origins. The short film, sponsored by Windows, features Jon Lee Richardson as Floyd, a young man whose peaceful nap is disrupted by disturbing phone calls that quickly escalate into a terrifying nightmare.

The unsettling narrative takes an eerie turn when Floyd discovers he isn't the only version of himself, adding a layer of complexity to the story. Barker has written, directed, and edited Mama Bear, ensuring his signature style shines through in every aspect of the film.

The cast of Mama Bear includes Katie Sarife as Lacey, Ericka Kreuz as Ms. Wilson, and Joshua Snyder as Floyd's doppelgänger, adding depth to the already intense storyline.

Sarife is set to appear in another upcoming horror short, Medium Rare, directed by Curry Barker's father Jeff Barker, which was reported to be in the works exclusively elsewhere.

Mama Bear's tragic conclusion sees Lacey shoot and kill Floyd, before revealing the existence of his doppelgänger in a shocking twist.

The short film also marks a reunion for Curry Barker with some familiar faces from his previous project, Obsession, including production designer Vivian Gray and costume designer Blair James.

James, who spoke to this publication shortly after Mama Bear's release, noted that the production came together relatively quickly, with filming taking place just three and a half weeks prior.

The speed of production is a testament to Barker's ability to work efficiently and effectively, which has been evident in his previous collaborations with James, including Obsession.

Barker's background in short-form horror has been a key factor in his transition to feature films, with his 2023 short film The Chair catching the attention of producer James Harris of Tea Shop Productions.

The variety of projects that James undertakes is part of what makes her work exciting, as she enjoys switching between quick styling jobs and longer feature films. This flexibility allows her to bring a fresh approach to each project, which in turn keeps the creative process engaging for her.

James has stated that she dedicates herself fully to every project, whether it's a short film or a long feature. She appreciates the rush of working on a project with a clear start and end date, as seen in short films. This approach also applies to styling and costume designing jobs, where she gets to explore new ideas and techniques.

Barker's return to short-form horror is significant, given his continued success with Obsession. The film follows Bear as he uses the One Wish Willow to make his crush, Nikki, love him more than anyone else in the world. However, this gesture spirals out of control, leading to a terrifying sequence of events.

The contrast between Barker's recent feature-length work and his return to short-form horror is notable, highlighting his versatility as a filmmaker. His ability to adapt to different project types has been evident throughout his career, including collaborations with James on previous projects like Obsession.

Curry Barker's success with Obsession has paved the way for his return to YouTube horror roots with Mama Bear. This latest project marks a significant departure from the big-budget film that grossed over $500 million worldwide on a reported $750,000 budget.

Barker is set to direct and star in Anything But Ghosts, slated for release May 7, 2027, alongside Tomlinson, who will also co-write the project. The film is being produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster and Spooky Pictures. Additionally, Barker is attached to write and direct a reimagining of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
