A Swiss journalist's commentary on an Israeli bobsledder during the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics has been deemed discriminatory by a country's broadcasting complaints authority.

The Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television (ICA) announced its decision after reviewing four public complaints about the broadcast on French-language network Radio Television Suisse (RTS).

A nine-member panel voted 5-4 in favor of upholding the complaints, with the ruling issued on Friday. The incident occurred during a bobsleigh event in February.

Sports commentator Stefan Reina had referred to Israeli team pilot Adam Jeremy Edelman as "a Zionist to the core, which he described himself.

The International Olympic Committee's (IOC) decision-making process was questioned by Swiss commentator Stefan Reina in his coverage of the Israeli bobsleigh team at the Cortina Winter Games. He implied that the athlete's participation raised questions about the IOC's eligibility criteria for athletes who have supported war efforts or expressed views on social media.

According to a statement from the ICA, Reina devoted an entire segment of his commentary to discussing Edelman's statements on Israel's actions in Gaza. The ICA noted that these comments suggested Edelman should be excluded from the Olympic Games due to his political views.

A majority of the ICA members found that Reina's prepared remarks conveyed a discriminatory message towards Edelman, singling him out among other athletes competing that day. This unequal treatment was deemed to violate the prohibition against discrimination.

The ICA has announced plans to publish its written reasoning for this decision, outlining the measures it will request from the broadcaster to prevent future breaches of the rules. Typically, when a breach is found, the ICA directs the broadcaster to take steps to prevent further violations and report on their progress.

Edelman responded to Reina's comments by calling them a diatribe" that he did not give any credence to, suggesting his commentary had little impact on him personally.

The Swiss government has been urged to take decisive action against a commentary that was deemed discriminatory towards Israel's Olympic bobsleigh team.

The International Commission on Audiovisual Services (ICA) is set to review the incident, determining whether any laws were violated and whether there was compliance with requirements of appropriateness and diversity.

The ICA will assess whether the commentary infringed upon fundamental rights, protected minorities, and whether it glorified or extenuated violence. The commission's findings can be appealed directly to Switzerland's Federal Supreme Court.

The controversy surrounding the commentary has sparked international outrage, coming as it did amidst ongoing concerns over Israel's actions in Gaza, which have been condemned by human rights groups and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
