Disney+ has announced a new Japanese horror anthology series, Night Tales Club, which will premiere on the streaming platform in January 2027. The six-part supernatural mystery series brings together some of Japan's most renowned genre filmmakers to adapt stories from acclaimed writer Ichi Sawamura's collection.

The project was unveiled with first-look images and a teaser trailer, showcasing the team behind the series. Each episode will be directed by a different filmmaker, including horror master Kiyoshi Kurosawa and Takashi Shimizu, known for his work on Ju-on. The other directors involved in the series are Shinzo Katayama, Yukiko Sode, Yuichiro Sakashita, and Yosuke Nakamura.

The story follows Hojo, a wealthy entrepreneur played by Takayuki Yamada, who is obsessed with unexplained phenomena. Convinced that ghost stories, monsters, and curses are signs of a deeper conspiracy, Hojo establishes the Night Tales Club to gather people who have experienced inexplicable events.

According to the series' premise, members of the club share their experiences in exchange for 20 million yen (approximately $130,000) in gold. The story appears to be a complex exploration of supernatural mysteries and conspiracies.

The release of Night Tales Club on Disney+ is set for January 2027, marking another exciting addition to the platform's slate of international productions.

The anthology series Night Tales Club is set in a mysterious and eerie atmosphere, where each episode presents a different supernatural account that Hojo attempts to unravel. The framing sequences of these episodes are directed by Kenji Nakajima, whose notable credits include visually stunning works such as The Naked Director and Tokyo Swindlers.

Yusuke Wakabayashi and Teruhisa Yamamoto are producing Night Tales Club, with Sawamura writing the scripts for each episode based on his original collection of stories. As the creator of these terrifying tales, Sawamura expressed his excitement about their upcoming release, stating that he feels "an enormous sense of surprise and joy" at the prospect of scaring audiences worldwide.

The expansion of Disney+ into international programming is a significant move, with Japan playing a key role in the company's growing ambitions in Asia. As part of this strategy, Disney aims to nearly triple its annual output of international original series over the next three years, increasing production from approximately 60-70 shows annually.

As part of its efforts to strengthen ties with Japanese creative partners, Disney has forged a multi-year development agreement with TBS-owned production company The Seven. This partnership is aimed at producing more live-action originals for global streaming audiences.

Disney+ has already made a name for itself in Japan with shows like Gannibal, a folk-horror thriller that explores a sinister secret in a remote rural village, and Land of Tanabata, a supernatural mystery series. Other upcoming titles include Merry Berry Love, a romantic comedy that blends Korean and Japanese cultures, and The One Shot, a variety show.
