Chipotle Mexican Grill's shares surged 7% in extended trading on Wednesday after the company reported mixed quarterly results, but a promising outlook from its CEO.

The burrito chain saw an increase in same-store sales growth during the quarter, bucking industry trends driven by low-income consumers who spent more money. This trend is notable as many restaurants have struggled to maintain sales growth due to economic pressures. Chipotle's restaurant-level operating margin did shrink, however.

CEO Scott Boatwright expressed confidence that the company will continue to perform well for the rest of the year, citing initiatives from its "recipe for growth strategy" as key drivers of success. He stated on the earnings conference call that despite ongoing consumer and industry headwinds, the company is building momentum and gaining tools to succeed in any environment.

Chipotle's quarterly net sales rose by 9.6% to $3.29 billion, driven primarily by the opening of new restaurants. The company opened 84 company-owned locations and five international sites run by licensees during this period.

The restaurant-level operating margin fell from 24.5% to 23.3%, while excluding certain charges, Chipotle earned 27 cents per share. This performance was a decrease from the previous year's fiscal third-quarter net income of $382.1 million and earnings per share of 29 cents.

Chipotle reported that its sales had initially begun to recover in July after pulling back due to concerns over raw lettuce consumption linked to a cyclospora outbreak. However, further challenges arose when the company temporarily removed jalapenos from Minnesota restaurants following a potential salmonella outbreak tied to their supply.

The company's quarterly results included net income of $339.9 million and earnings per share of 27 cents, down from the same period in the previous year.

Chipotle's same-store sales growth has continued for a third consecutive quarter, despite challenges faced last year. The chain reported a 2.1% increase in sales at stores open at least 13 months, driven by a 1.3% rise in average check size.

This improvement was notable as it marked the first time this year that low-income consumers outperformed their high-income counterparts at Chipotle's restaurants. According to the CEO, this shift can be attributed to low-income consumers spending more during periods of lower promotions, rather than simply taking advantage of discounts.

The company has reaffirmed its forecast for a low-single-digit percentage increase in same-store sales for the full year. Looking ahead, Chipotle plans to expand its presence with around 340 to 360 new company-owned locations in the U.S. and Canada by 2027, as well as an additional 15 to 25 international restaurants.
