NBCUniversal's Peacock streaming service has achieved its second consecutive profitable quarter, marking a significant turnaround for the platform that had previously reported losses.

The milestone was announced alongside Comcast's third-quarter financial results, which showed a pre-tax profit of $261 million from Peacock, following a $189 million profit in the previous quarter and a $217 million loss in the same period last year.

A major contributor to Peacock's success has been its streaming of FIFA World Cup games, which generated an additional $440 million in media revenues during the second quarter. In the third quarter, the platform also benefited from the final stages of the tournament, with incremental advertising revenue reaching $224 million through its own service and that of NBCUniversal's Spanish-language network Telemundo.

Comcast's overall content and experiences businesses reported a 6.5 percent increase in revenue to $10.5 billion, with adjusted EBITDA up by 29 percent to $1.8 billion. Meanwhile, media revenue rose by 13 percent to $5.35 billion, with an adjusted EBITDA of $769 million.

The decline in studios revenue has been somewhat offset by the growth of Peacock, Comcast's streaming service. Revenue for Peacock reached $1.8 billion in the most recent quarter, a significant increase from the $1.4 billion reported in the same period last year.

This surge in revenue can be attributed to recent subscription price hikes and lower programming costs. As a result, Peacock has been able to attract more subscribers and generate higher revenue for NBCUniversal. The streaming service's growth is a welcome development for Comcast, which continues to face challenges in its broadband division.

Despite the decline in overall revenue, Comcast has managed to trim its broadband losses. In the third quarter, the company saw 376,000 fewer broadband subscriber losses compared to the same period last year. This improvement suggests that Comcast is making progress in stabilizing its broadband business.

The latest results from Comcast follow a significant change in its operations. The cable TV-focused spinoff from NBCUniversal, which includes CNBC, MSNBC, USA, and Golf Channel, has been separated from the company. This move may have contributed to the improved performance of Comcast's broadband division, although the exact impact is not clear.

Comcast has announced plans to complete the separation of Versant by mid-2027, marking a significant step towards its goal of creating two standalone companies. The process is already underway, with executives emphasizing the importance of building out these separate entities.

The company will take a substantial restructuring charge in excess of $1 billion in the fourth quarter as it continues to revamp its mobile business around convergence products to counter competition from wireless providers such as Verizon and T-Mobile.
