Pat McAfee, known for his work as an ESPN analyst and host of College GameDay, is making a surprising transition to the big screen in Peter Berg's new sports war drama, The Mosquito Bowl.

The film tells the true story of four star college football players who enlisted in the Marines after Pearl Harbor, with one notable detour: a legendary football game known as the Mosquito Bowl. McAfee joins an all-star cast that includes Nicholas Galitzine, Bill Skarsgard, Ray Nicholson, and Tom Francis in his acting debut.

McAfee's role is significant, as he plays a tough-as-nails Marines drill instructor alongside some of Hollywood's biggest names. The film premiered at Los Angeles' AFI Fest on Thursday, where McAfee made a splash walking the red carpet.

According to McAfee, his entry into acting was facilitated by a chance encounter with Timothée Chalamet on College GameDay in 2024. Chalamet's appearance on the show is said to have brought a flood of Hollywood interest to the program, coinciding perfectly with The Mosquito Bowl's casting process.

McAfee's work as an ESPN analyst and host has undoubtedly prepared him for the spotlight, but his transition to acting marks a significant new chapter in his career.

Pat McAfee's acting debut in "The Mosquito Bowl has been a whirlwind experience, one that required him to step out of his comfort zone as a sports personality.

McAfee revealed that he was initially approached for the role of a drill instructor and was taken aback by the offer. He spent a week at Marine Corps recruit training site in Parris Island, South Carolina, immersing himself in the role and learning the ins and outs of being a drill instructor.

As part of his preparation, McAfee even admitted to being scared and unsure if he would be able to pull off the demanding role. However, he threw himself into the challenge, determined to give it his all. He also revealed that he had not watched the film ahead of its premiere, eager to see how his portrayal would be received.

According to McAfee, Ari Emanuel, whose company TKO owns the WWE where McAfee makes occasional appearances, was instrumental in introducing him to acting opportunities. Emanuel saw something in McAfee and presented the idea to him, suggesting that he could have a future in acting.

McAfee's experience on set has been a transformative one, with him falling in love with the craft of acting after working on The Mosquito Bowl. He expressed his gratitude for being given the opportunity and stated that he left no stone unturned in trying to excel in the role.

The casting process for The Mosquito Bowl involved some unconventional methods, according to director Billy Berg. He initially had doubts about Pat McAfee's ability to take on a serious acting role due to his busy ESPN schedule.

However, Berg has revealed that McAfee received secret acting coaching from none other than Bradley Cooper, which gave him an edge in the role. This was just one of several pieces of advice and guidance that McAfee sought out in preparation for the film.

McAfee's research and preparation went beyond just script study. He also reached out to Tom Cruise for guidance on how to portray a character convincingly on screen. Berg has praised McAfee's dedication to his craft, saying he was calling actors that he knew, asking for advice, wanting to put on a good face for him.

This level of commitment and enthusiasm impressed Berg, who noted that McAfee had somehow managed to absorb all the information and techniques he learned from Cooper and Cruise. The director expressed amazement at how well-equipped McAfee was when they began filming.

The film's unique approach to the World War II genre has resonated with audiences, according to co-star Harris Galitzine. He believes that the story's focus on real-life college football stars who fought in the war adds a fresh perspective to the well-trodden subject matter.

Galitzine also praised the script for capturing the heart and emotion of the story, which explores the complexities of war through the lens of sports. This blend of drama and action has helped The Mosquito Bowl" stand out in a crowded field of World War II dramas.

Nicholson, the son of legendary actor Jack Nicholson, made a personal appeal to Berg to be part of the film by writing him a heartfelt letter. In it, he expressed his desire to have a war movie on his resume and highlighted the unique bond that develops among soldiers during wartime.

The Mosquito Bowl is set for release in theaters on October 30, with a streaming debut on Netflix on November 25.
