Renowned author and former politician Jeffrey Archer has passed away at the age of 86.

Archer's writing career spanned over five decades, during which time he sold more than 300 million books worldwide. His novels often featured settings from his home town in Somerset, drawing inspiration from local landscapes and communities. Works such as The Clifton Chronicles and Kane and Abel showcased his storytelling prowess.

According to a statement released by Archer's publisher HarperCollins, the author died suddenly at home on Monday while engaged in writing activities. No further details were provided about the circumstances surrounding his passing.

Archer's life was marked by both literary success and controversy. In 2001, he was convicted of perjury and jailed for four years after being found guilty of lying during a libel case against The Daily Star newspaper.

Jeffrey Archer's post-jail career in politics continued until his eventual retirement from the House of Lords in 2024.

After his release from prison in 2003, he returned to public life and maintained a presence in the upper chamber of Parliament for over two decades.

In the run-up to the publication of his final book, Archer made a notable return to his alma mater, Wellington School, where he was invited to promote his latest novel.

During this visit, Archer expressed excitement at reconnecting with the school and seeing the next generation of students, commenting on the sense of nostalgia it evoked in him.

As part of his promotional tour for Adam and Eve, Archer had also planned to attend the Cheltenham Festival over the weekend, where he would discuss the final stages of writing his novel.

Jeffrey Archer's dedication to writing was renowned among publishers, who praised him as a master of his craft.

HarperCollins confirmed that Archer had been at the Leicester Square Theatre in London on Sunday, where he met fans and signed books alongside broadcaster Gyles Brandreth.

Brandreth shared his experience working with Archer, describing their show together as a celebration of the author's new novel. He recalled Archer being in high spirits, charming audiences with his humor and self-deprecation.

Nadhim Zahawi, a former Conservative chancellor, also paid tribute to Archer on social media, highlighting his unique blend of wit, warmth, and energy that made him a memorable companion.
