Kimi Antonelli has secured a dominant victory in the United States Grand Prix but still needs to wait for confirmation of his first world title.
The 20-year-old Italian driver from Italy held off strong challenges from Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc to take the top spot on the podium, while Mercedes team-mate George Russell came home in fourth place.
As a result, Antonelli now leads Russell by 123 points with just one grand prix remaining, but he still needs to navigate the final round without losing too many more points to secure the championship. He will be crowned champion next weekend in Mexico City as long as he doesn't lose more than 23 points to Russell or 24 points to Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton.
To guarantee his title, Antonelli only needs a ninth-place finish if Russell wins the race, while a tenth place would suffice if Hamilton takes victory. If either of his rivals fails to win, however, Antonelli will be champion next Sunday regardless of where he finishes in Mexico City.
With a dominant start, Antonelli quickly took the lead in the race, leaving his rivals struggling to keep up. A thrilling first lap saw Verstappen and Leclerc engaged in a fierce battle for second place, but Antonelli was already more than two seconds clear by the time they completed their initial lap.
The strategic choice of medium tyres proved to be a decisive factor in Antonelli's success, allowing him to complete the race on just one stop while many other drivers opted for two. This move underscored his superiority as he crossed the finish line 16 seconds ahead of Leclerc.
The victory also served as a testament to the effectiveness of Mercedes' upgrade package, which had initially shown promise in Malaysia but then faltered before being refined through further development work.
Mercedes' engineers have been working tirelessly to fine-tune the new specification and it appears their efforts have paid off, with the car now demonstrably quicker than its predecessor.
The US Grand Prix was a closely contested affair, with several drivers vying for position throughout the race. However, not all drivers were as fortunate as others, and one such driver who had a frustrating day was Russell. Starting sixth on the grid, he struggled to make progress, eventually finishing eighth after being handed a five-second penalty.
Russell's misfortune meant that Hamilton's fourth-place finish became even more significant in terms of the championship standings. Although both drivers have mathematically secured their chances of winning the title, they will need to perform well in the remaining races to secure their position at the top. The fact that they still have a slim chance of taking the championship is testament to their consistency throughout the season.
The action on track was provided by Leclerc and Verstappen, who engaged in an enthralling battle for second place. Initially wheel-to-wheel, they later adopted different strategies as the race progressed, with each driver trying to outmaneuver the other through a series of high-speed corners. The Dutchman eventually emerged victorious after a bold move down the inside of Turn 15.
Verstappen's aggressive driving style was on full display as he closed in on Leclerc and then overtook him for second place. Ferrari, who were running third with Leclerc behind Verstappen, opted to wait two laps longer before bringing their driver in for his first stop. This decision ultimately paid off, allowing the Monegasque to regain a competitive position and continue his battle for points.
Verstappen opted for soft tyres in his first stint, but then switched to mediums on lap 31 as he prepared for a second stint.
Meanwhile, Leclerc had chosen mediums from the start and was able to run eight laps longer than Verstappen, taking full advantage of his tyre choice.
The Ferrari driver's decision allowed him to stay within striking distance of Verstappen, who had fallen behind Lando Norris' McLaren after passing it on lap 47.
As Leclerc closed in on Verstappen, he was able to pass the Dutchman down the inside of Turn One two laps later, securing second place.
The United States Grand Prix saw Racing Bulls' Liam Lawson and Alpine's Pierre Gasly take the last two points-paying positions on the podium.
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli is on the cusp of a historic championship win, with his infectious personality and talent making him a fan favorite among team members. His gratitude towards Mercedes for giving him opportunities in F1 is evident, and his age of 20 makes his potential for future success all the more impressive.
Next weekend's Mexico City Grand Prix will likely be the stage where Antonelli is officially crowned as the sport's youngest world champion. The event takes place from October 30 to November 1, marking a change in venue after the Texas-based USGP.
