Frank Mancuso Sr., a film industry veteran who rose from humble beginnings to become chairman and CEO of two major studios, Paramount Pictures and MGM, has passed away at the age of 93.

He died on Thursday at his home in Los Angeles due to complications related to cancer, according to an announcement by his family. Mancuso's impressive career spanned nearly three decades at Paramount, where he held various leadership positions.

A rare studio executive with a background in marketing, Mancuso worked his way up the ranks to become president of Paramount's motion picture group in 1984. He played a crucial role in steering the struggling studio back on track during his tenure.

The appointment of Mancuso as chairman and CEO was seen as a pivotal moment for Paramount, coming at a time when the studio was facing significant challenges. His leadership marked a turning point in the company's fortunes, although details about his specific contributions are scarce.

Mancuso's family has announced his passing, but further information about his funeral or memorial service is not available.

Mancuso's tenure at Paramount was marked by significant changes to the studio's production strategy. He brought in experienced executive Ned Tanen as president of production and secured lucrative contracts with top talent, including Eddie Murphy. This new approach paid off with a string of successful films that catapulted Paramount to the top of the box office.

The studio's focus on big-budget tentpole releases led to a series of hits in 1986 and 1987. Top Gun, Crocodile Dundee, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and other films contributed to a remarkable market share of 22 percent domestically in 1986. The following year saw further success with Fatal Attraction, Beverly Hills Cop II, and The Untouchables.

Under Mancuso's leadership, Paramount also expanded its presence on television. The studio launched popular shows like The Arsenio Hall Show, Entertainment Tonight, Cheers, Family Ties, and Star Trek: The Next Generation during his tenure.

However, not all of Mancuso's decisions proved successful. The 1990 sequel misfires The Two Jakes and The Godfather Part III led to a change in leadership at the studio. Producer Stanley R. Jaffe was appointed COO of Paramount Communications, effectively replacing Mancuso as head of the studio.

Mancuso's departure from Paramount in March 1991 marked the end of an era for the studio. He went on to file a $45 million breach of contract lawsuit against the company, eventually receiving a reported $20 million settlement.

Mancuso's return to Hollywood marked a significant shift in his career after a couple of years away from the film industry. In July 1993, he was appointed chairman and CEO of MGM by its owner Credit Lyonnais, replacing Alan Ladd Jr.

During his tenure at the helm of MGM, Mancuso oversaw several key developments that revitalized the studio's portfolio. One notable achievement was the resurrection of United Artists, which had not released a film since Rocky V in 1990. He brought in John Calley, a former Warner Bros. executive, to run United Artists.

Mancuso's acquisition spree also resulted in the purchase of Orion Pictures, The Samuel Goldwyn Co., and assets from PolyGram Filmed Entertainment. This strategic move helped bolster MGM's library of films and expanded its reach in the market. Notable releases during his tenure included Stargate (1994), Get Shorty (1995), The Birdcage (1996), and three James Bond movies.

Mancuso's leadership at MGM lasted until April 1999, when he was replaced by Alex Yemenidjian as chairman and Chris McGurk as vice chairman. This change marked a significant shift in the studio's management structure under its owner Kirk Kerkorian.

Born on July 25, 1933, in Buffalo, Mancuso came from a working-class background with his father, George, serving in the post office for over four decades and his mother, Mary, devoting her time to homemaking.

Mancuso's career at Paramount spanned several decades, starting in 1962 as a film booker in its Buffalo office. He steadily climbed the ranks to become vice president and general sales manager for Paramount Canada in 1970, based out of Toronto. In 1976, he took on the role of manager of Paramount's Western Division in Los Angeles, overseeing operations from that key hub.

Mancuso continued his ascent within Paramount, becoming executive vice president of marketing and distribution for the entire company by 1979. This marked a significant milestone in his professional journey, as he began to play a crucial role in shaping the studio's overall strategy. His expertise in marketing and distribution would serve him well in future leadership positions.

As Mancuso's career progressed, he was entrusted with increasingly important roles within the industry. In 1983, he was named president of Paramount's motion picture group, marking his first involvement in movie production. This appointment underscored his growing influence within the company.

Mancuso's legacy extends beyond his work at Paramount, as he has held prominent positions at other organizations. He served as chairman at both the Motion Picture & Television Fund and the Geffen Playhouse, leaving a lasting impact on these institutions.

Andy Garcia has praised Frank Mancuso Sr.'s remarkable character, calling him a "beacon of class" in the industry. The actor's statement highlights Mancuso's exceptional qualities, including his warmth, integrity, and generosity. These traits have undoubtedly left a lasting impression on those who knew him.

Garcia's tribute also reflects on the personal impact Mancuso had on his life, describing their relationship as one of friendship, support, and guidance. The actor will deeply miss Mancuso but continues to draw inspiration from his example, ensuring that his legacy lives on in a profound way.
