The sight was powerful, enough to transport you through time. The Giants’ throwback uniforms evoked images of Lawrence Taylor and Phil Simms, strengthened by the gold helmets and red numbers across the line of scrimmage, worn by Joe Montana, Jerry Rice and Ronnie Lott in their classic playoff encounters.

Reminders of glory days were joined by the thrill of what could be, should Jaxson Dart begin to sidestep defensive target practice, and unleash his poise, confidence and athleticism upon the league for the next decade or so.

But Sunday’s 34-24 home loss to San Francisco was just a reminder of how little there is to enjoy this season outside of Dart’s growth. Following the team’s fifth double-digit loss of the season — which was not nearly as close as the scoreboard suggested — the Giants fell to 2-7 for the third straight season under Brian Daboll, and are just a half-game ahead of the Saints for the worst record in the NFC.

The next month could produce even more misery, with the Giants’ next four games coming against teams (Chicago, Green Bay, at Detroit, at New England) with a combined record of 22-10-1.
