Mets score three-run Little League homer as Royals make comedy of errors

Catastrophe struck the Royals on Tuesday night at Citi Field — and it led to a Little League home run for the Mets.

With two outs and the Mets’ A.J. Ewing and Bo Bichette on base in the bottom of the first inning, Carson Benge hit a ball back to Kansas City starter Seth Lugo, who tossed — off-balance — wildly past first baseman Jac Caglianone as Ewing ran home.

Caglianone then threw the ball back toward third and hit nothing but the third base dugout. In an attempt to get Bichette out at home, third Nick Loftin threw wildly and allowed both Bichette and Benge to come around.

Caglianone, Lugo and Loftin were all charged with throwing errors. All three runs on the Little League homer were unearned, so in a positive for the ex-Met Lugo, his ERA was not affected.

The play unfolded like a car crash one couldn’t look away from and quickly put the Mets up 3-0 before Kansas City’s Tyler Tolbert cut the lead with a two-run homer in the top of the second.

Ewing then hit a two-run homer in the bottom half to bring the Mets’ lead back to three.

With all the misfortunes the Mets have faced this season, the Royals might have just committed the most outrageous play of the season at Citi Field.
