Former Vice President Dick Cheney died today, Nov. 4, at the age of 84.

His family announced his death “due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease,” in a statement that also noted “his beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed.”

Before Cheney served two terms as vice president under President George W. Bush, he was President George H.W. Bush’s Secretary of Defense. During his tenure as vice president, he was widely considered to be the “architect” behind the Iraq War.

The polarizing political figure was the subject of an equally polarizing film, “Vice,” from writer and director Adam McKay, who called Cheney “the single most powerful political figure in modern American history.”

Christian Bale won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of the former VP, which spans 50 years, while Amy Adams played wife Lynne Cheney and Sam Rockwell starred as Former President George W. Bush.

Cheney and his family were not involved in the making of the film, but his daughter, Congresswoman Liz Cheney, bashed the film following its release, stating on Fox and Friends that Bale (who had previously portrayed Batman) “finally had the chance to play a real superhero, and he clearly screwed it up.”
