Patrick Mahomes has pulled off his latest act of wizardry, and it might be the most impressive of all.
The Chiefs quarterback was back on the field for organized team activities (OTAs) on Tuesday, just a little over five months after tearing the LCL and ACL in his left knee, ESPN reported.
ESPN added that Mahomes did throw the ball, but the full extent of his participation is not clear. The Chiefs will host a practice on Thursday that will be open to the media.
Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said earlier in May that Mahomes was tracking “way ahead of schedule” in his rehab from the significant knee surgery.
“I mean, this guy has been in the building — especially for, like, a player who has accomplished everything, can do anything he wants, he can hire his own trainers, he can be wherever he wants,” Veach said. “He’s in our building every single day. And even when he goes away for a few days, say to Dallas for a weekend with his family, he takes one of our trainers with him.
“Needless to say, he’s way ahead of schedule. I think the biggest challenge we’re going to have is protecting him against himself, because I’m sure when we get to St. Joe for training camp, he’s going to want to be full go.”
Head coach Andy Reid kept things a little closer to the vest, telling “The Rich Eisen Show” on May 15 that Mahomes didn’t experience any setbacks but that the team was taking things day-by-day in the signal-caller’s progress.
Mahomes tore the ACL and LCL during a Dec. 14 loss, a game that ended Kansas City’s streak of 10 consecutive seasons reaching the playoffs. He underwent surgery to repair both injuries shortly thereafter. In March, Mahomes was seen throwing the ball for the first time since the injuries.

“Day by Day!” the 30-year-old Mahomes wrote on the video shared on his Instagram Story. “Felt Great being able to throw the ball around today!”
The Chiefs this offseason added some new faces to the quarterback room, sending a 2027 sixth-round pick to the Jets for Justin Fields before picking Garrett Nussmeier in the seventh round of the draft.
