In the writer’s defense — me — the Yankees were 42-25 at the time with a 4 ½ game lead in the AL East, battling the Tigers for the best record in the American League. The Mets led MLB with a winning percentage of .652 and were ahead of the Phillies by 5 ½ games.
The Yankees were in the midst of a three-game winning streak. The Mets had just won their sixth in a row.
It’s no wonder the writer asked the stat gurus at Elias Sports Bureau to check whether the Mets and Yankees ever had finished with the best records in their leagues in the same year. (They hadn’t.)
