Trent Grisham has hit the ball hard and not often been rewarded — perhaps because too many batted balls have touched the dirt rather than sailed over it — while drawing plenty of walks in what has been an overall unremarkable beginning to his season.
More remarkable, though, is how Grisham has been conducting his at-bats: He has barely swung.
With all the early season and it’s-only-mid-April caveats, the Yankees center fielder entered play Monday having seen 242 pitches and having offered at 81. Among 179 qualified major leaguers, Grisham’s 33.5 percent swing rate ranked 178th, with only Baltimore’s Taylor Ward more selective.
As a Yankee, Grisham has always been patient and took a cut at the fifth-lowest percentage of pitches last season, but his 2025 rate of 38.5 percent nearly paints the picture of a free swinger compared with his first 15 games this season.
