WWE's approach to WarGames needs a hard look after Survivor Series missteps

WWE is starting to go about WarGames all wrong.

There are plenty of things to tighten up with how the matches were built, executed and presented during Survivor Series at Petco Park in San Diego last weekend.

WWE has begun to rely too much on building “star-studded” WarGames teams rather than well-rounded teams for matches with a clear overarching story with consequences. Last year, we saw CM Punk and Roman Reigns cutting a deal that paid off at WrestleMania. This year WWE went for small beats for Bron Breakker, AJ Lee, Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes — plus a masked-attacker spot it has used plenty of times before. The least WWE can do now is have that person cost Punk the World Heavyweight championship before revealing who it is.

One of the best WarGames matches WWE has had was the one involving the original Bloodline and the story of whether Sami Zayn was going to earn his spot in the group. It was a compelling story involving a major faction, much like when WarGames was based around the Undisputed Era in NXT. Granted, things got a little wonkier this year with Seth Rollins being out of the mix, so it felt like we got a mishmash version of The Vision on one side.
