A dramatic Game 7 in the World Series drew in a dramatically large audience on Saturday night as the Dodgers captured their second consecutive title in a 5-4, 11-inning win over the Blue Jays.
Nielsen fast-nationals revealed that 25.45 million viewers tuned into Fox for the decisive World Series game, leading to a total average of 25.98 million across all of Fox Sports’ platforms, marking the largest audience for MLB since the Astros-Dodgers Game 7 in 2017.
That series brought in 28.24 million people.
The Game 7 telecast this year now sits fifth among World Series Game 7s since 2001, with the 2016 series ranking first with over 40 million viewers tuning in to see the Cubs win a title, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Viewership peaked on Saturday night between 11:30-11:45 p.m., with 31.54 million viewers tuning in.
The final ratings will be made available on Tuesday and could very well show an even greater viewership number.
Canadian broadcaster Sportsnet averaged 10.9 million viewers for the matchup — the largest audience for a Blue Jays game in history — peaking at 14 million viewers in the bottom of the ninth inning and reaching 18.5 million Canadians throughout the game, nearly 45 percent of the county’s population.
The Dodger managed to come back from a 4-2 hole to tie the game with Max Muncy’s solo shot in the eighth inning and Miguel Rojas’ solo home run in the top of the ninth.
Will Smith hit a go-ahead home run in the 11th inning and the Dodgers’ defense held off the Blue Jays in the bottom of the inning.
