A tourist has plunged to his death in a Colombian beauty spot while trying to take a selfie, according to reports.

Tobias Fischer, 35, died during his solo hike in the mountains in the Taganga district, northern Colombia, on October 19 near where he was staying in the port city of Santa Maria.

He tried to take a selfie at a viewpoint in the Dumbira forest with the sea in the background when he lost his balance and fell down a ravine, local media reports.

His body was spotted shortly after his fall by other hikers, who called emergency services.

Mr Fischer was rushed to hospital, where he later suffered a cardiac arrest as a result of the severe injuries he sustained in the fall and died. Investigators have ruled Fischer’s death an accident.

‘We have been informed that the foreigner fell from a high place while he was walking and was quickly helped by the community, who took him to the emergency room at the Taganga health post,’ a police spokesperson told local media.

Mr Fischer reportedly arrived in Santa Maria earlier this month to explore the nearby beaches and mountains.

He had reportedly taken to social media to write about ‘the best experiences of his life’ in Colombia in the days before his death.

Mr Fischer’s family has been notified and is working with authorities to repatriate is body, according to reports.

This comes two days after a man was trampled to death after trying to take a selfie with an elephant.

Srikant Satre, 23, and two of his friends ventured into the Abapur forest close to the city of Gadchiroli in central India following reports that an elephant had been spotted nearby.

Once they spotted the elephant, the trio decided to start posing for pictures with the wild animal.

It was at this point that the elephant charged at them and killed Mr Satre as he attempted to take a selfie with it.

The workers were in the city, which is situated in the Indian state of Maharashtra, for cable laying work when they heard rumours from locals on October 22 that an elephant had been sighted nearby.

According to the Indian news website NDTV, the three friends agreed to go and find the animal when they weren’t working on Thursday morning.
