Former Blue Jays pitcher Todd Stottlemyre has released new details of Duane Ward’s untimely death.
Ward was in Toronto for a statue unveiling celebrating the teams 1992 and 1993 World Series championship teams, but passed away before Saturday’s ceremonies at 62.
“We all came together in Toronto for a special celebration and tribute. With my deepest regret I am making this post,” Stottlemyre posted on X.
“We had no idea our Friday night dinner and the photo I posted was going to be the last time we were going to see Duane Ward. From celebration to sadness in a moment. May God rest your soul BlueJay brother and warrior on the mound.”
Stottlemyre and Ward were teammates from 1988-’94 in Toronto.
Ward is one of the best relief pitchers in Blue Jays history and holds the franchise record for saves in a season with 45 in 1993.
His best season was 1993, making his lone all-star appearance, and continuing his dominance in the playoffs with four saves, two of which in the World Series.
“Duane will be deeply missed by our fans, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family,” the Blue Jays said in a statement. “Duane will always be a cherished part of the Blue Jays family, and we will be forever grateful for his contributions to our organization and to baseball in Canada.”
Ward was drafted No. 9 overall by the Braves in 1982 but was traded to Toronto during his first full MLB season in 1986 and spent the rest of his career there.
The Blue Jays paid tribute to Ward with a video montage and brief moment of silence prior to their Sunday game against the White Sox.
“You will never be forgotten. Without your contribution there would be no BACK TO BACK,” Stottlemyre wrote.
“Life is short and we will never know when we will be called. Give someone a hug today and reach out to a loved one and tell them how much you love them.”
