This can’t be a surprise. It certainly shouldn’t be, if you’ve followed the Yankees closely.

The fact they were soundly outplayed by the Blue Jays in the ALDS was typical of a season in which they often beat up on undermanned opponents and were flattened by the best in the American League.

Toronto outclassed them during the regular season and again in the ALDS, closing out the one-sided series with a relatively easy 5-2 victory in The Bronx. The Blue Jays outscored the Yankees 34-19 in the four games, beating up on their pitching throughout, from the first pitch on Saturday to the last pitch on Wednesday.

During the regular season, the Yankees were one game over .500 against teams above .500 and 49-24 against everyone else. They were 5-8 against the Blue Jays, 4-9 against the Red Sox, 2-4 against the Tigers and 3-3 against the Guardians. They were 5-1 against the Mariners, an anomaly.
