The first quarter of this Mets season is obviously a regrettable mess overall, an unfortunate mélange of debilitating injuries and serious underperformance, leaving them with a record only better than the rebuilding Rockies in an improved National League.

There’s plenty of reason to believe they’re toast despite an 8-4 record over their past 12, from an injury list counting half their starting position players (with no timetable yet for Jorge Polanco, Luis Robert Jr. or Francisco Lindor) to MLB’s worst offense (.641 OPS) to a difficult closing schedule.

Only 33 percent of their games to date have come against winning teams, and they’ve won just 20 percent (3-12) of those. That’s a terrible indicator of what’s to come.

“It’s going to be tough,” Juan Soto told The Post about their comeback chances. “But I think, yes definitely, if we can put it together and can get some of the guys who are hurt healed up and back on track, I think we have a shot.”
