Steve Cohen is feeling Mets fans’ pain after they stunningly missed the playoffs, and the owner apologized to the fan base as they come to grips with the bitter end.

“Mets fans everywhere. I owe you an apology,” Cohen wrote Monday on X. “You did your part by showing up and supporting the team. We didn’t do our part. We will do a post-mortem and figure out the obvious and less obvious reasons why the team didn’t perform up to your and my expectations.

“We are all feeling raw emotions today. I know how much time and effort you have put into this team. The result was unacceptable. Your emotions tell me how much you care and continues to motivate the organization to do better. Thank You to the best fans in sports.”

Despite an approximately $340 million payroll and owning the best record in the sport (45-24) in mid-June, the Mets played like one of MLB’s worst teams over the final three-plus months.

The Mets now face an enormous offseason as they have to fix their pitching staff and make another decision on Pete Alonso, who said Sunday he will opt out of his contract to re-enter free agency this winter.

The Mets entered Game 162 against the Marlins on Sunday needing a win and a Reds loss to get into the postseason.

While the Reds lost to the Brewers, the listless Mets fell 4-0 in Miami.
