Red Bulls goalkeeper Carlos Coronel will hit the open market this offseason after his contract expires, ending a five-year run in New York that began in 2021.

The club confirmed the news on Monday with a post on social media thanking the goalkeeper for his time with the Red Bulls.

“Thank you for so much, Carlos. You were, are, and always will be Red,” the post said.

Talks between Coronel and the Red Bulls on an extension failed to result in a new deal for the keeper, The Athletic reported on Monday, setting the stage for him to reach free agency at the end of December.

Coronel’s time with the club appeared to be coming to an end toward the end of the Red Bulls season, and only seemed to be confirmed by the acquisition of goalkeeper John McCarthy at the MLS trade deadline in August.

A report by amNewYork suggested that the possibility of an extension for Coronel had largely been settled by the end of the regular season in October.

The Red Bulls missed out on the postseason this year for the first time since 2009 and Coronel made his final start for the club in the penultimate match of the year on Oct. 4 against Cincinnati at home.

Coronel made 180 appearances for the Red Bulls and played a big part in the club’s run to the MLS Cup last season, where they ultimately fell to the Los Angeles Galaxy.

The Red Bulls will have McCarthy under contract for next season, along with AJ Marcucci and up-and-coming U.S. keeper Aidan Stokes, who started in net for the United States during the U-17 World Cup that took place this month.

He had also traveled overseas to train with RB Leipzig, the Bundesliga club owned by the Red Bulls parent organization.
