On the one side of town there is a brand-new coach, Aaron Glenn. On the other, an incumbent coach preaching about a new day and a bright future. If I were Brian Daboll, I would do that, as well, because if not for the fact that the Giants really, really, really didn’t want to fire another coach, we would be welcoming Ben Johnson or Kellen Moore or some other fresh face to the New York football coaching fraternity.
And let’s put it this way: That has not always been an easy job. Thirty-eight men have coached the Jets and Giants for at least 10 games. Here is one man’s ranking, 1-38. I’m pretty sure the top portion of the list will be hard to argue with but, then, this is sports. Arguing is oxygen to we who care about them.
1. Bill Parcells
It’s possible he might top this list even if he’d never had that three-year dalliance with the Jets, but that certainly puts him over the top. He won 62 percent of his games with the Giants and 60 percent of his games as a Jet (a franchise record), and has those two Super Bowls with the blue and a near-miss with the green. He’s the only choice here.
2. Tom Coughlin
Two Super Bowls titles and 110 wins for the Giants, second in team history, and he’ll join Parcells in Canton some year soon.
