Soccer isn’t a fit for this king.
Appearing on the “New Heights” podcast that premiered Friday with co-host brothers Travis and Jason Kelce, Prince William revealed that his father, King Charles, isn’t a soccer fan. To put it mildly.
“My father hates futbol,” the Prince of Wales said.
Prince William, 44, is an Aston Villa fan. He recently toasted the team’s win in the Europa League final – their first European championship since 1982.
“My family haven’t got a particularly long history with futbol,” he said. “There are a few of us who support teams. My futbol love came from friends taking me to my first match and at school growing up. You can’t avoid the futbol chat. It’s everywhere. Yeah. And some school friends or childhood friends of mine took me to my first game.”
Prince William has been the president (and now patron) of the English Football Association since 2010.
England will face Mexico at 8 p.m. Sunday in the Round of 16 at the World Cup.
Does the prince and patron think his country can go all the way to the final at MetLife Stadium? He is “quietly confident.”
“If we’re in the finals,” Prince William said, “we’ll definitely be there.”
Prince William was a particularly well-timed guest for the Kelces given that he had a royal wedding to Kate Middleton, and America is hosting arguably its closest thing to such an event this weekend when pop star Taylor Swift marries Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce in New York.
Swift’s relationship with the royal family goes back to at least 2013. It’s a new thing for her fiance.
“They were an absolute delight to me,” Travis said. “I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to bow to them or curtsy, or just be an American idiot and shake their hand.”
Prince William is not expected to be at the Swift-Kelce nuptuials at Madison Square Garden.
