Oswaldo Cabrera is still hoping to get back on the field this season for the Yankees.

The fan favorite hasn’t resumed any baseball activities, but he gave an optimistic update about his rehab on Tuesday when he spoke to reporters before throwing out the first pitch at the Somerset Patriots game at TD Bank Ballpark.

“I’m doing great,” Cabrera said. “We are killing the rehab right now, but we are in a path that we have to calm down a little bit because we are getting so [many] good things quick, but the cartilage is still a little bit weak. So, we have to calm down a little bit, keep working up, keep progressing all those things with pressure and then I know everything will be fine.”

Cabrera has been out of the Yankees’ lineup since he suffered a left ankle fracture on May 12 against the Mariners.

The Yankees indicated back when he got hurt that he was likely done for the season and Cabrera went on to have surgery, but he is leaving the door open to a possible return.

“We are working on that,” he told reporters, according to The Trentonian. “Obviously it’s not a big window in that, but we are still working on that. We have to see, we have to just keep working to see what part we are in.”

Cabrera had been hitting .243/.322/.308 in 34 games with the Yankees before the injury occurred.

The injury happened in the top of the ninth as he was coming to score from third base on a fly ball to right field.

Cabrera appeared to bend his ankle in an awkward way and was clearly in pain on the ground.

The Yankees infielder was in Somerset on Tuesday to throw out the first pitch before the Patriots hosted the Hartford Yard Goats.
