One domino will affect the Islanders' entire free agency outlook

The comment was telling. And while anything can change once noon hits Wednesday and free agency officially begins, general manager Mathieu Darche dropped a major hint in the aftermath of the NHL draft — when he addressed reporters on Zoom and said that, in part, “I don’t expect any significant, significant changes.”

It marked the latest sign of how the individual in charge of the Islanders feels about the current class of free agents. That means the Islanders might not create the splashy headlines. That means their signings might be more about pivots — with captain Anders Lee set to test the open market — and depth, with somewhere between $10 million and $15 million to work with, according to noti.group’s Ethan Sears.

Everything that happens over the next day and beyond will tie back to Lee’s decision, to the ramifications on the Islanders’ top six, to who takes their captaincy next.

Darche knows that plenty of July 1 deals haunt teams in future seasons. He knows that, to other teams, a signing “might not look sexy because you’re not jumping in on something but sometimes might be the right thing to do,” he said Saturday. And based on his comments to this point, the Islanders might veer toward the latter once the cycle opens.
