Oklahoma State will soon have a new face to lead its program out of a dark period.

The Cowboys announced Tuesday that they have hired University of North Texas head coach Eric Morris to become their next bench boss.

Morris will take over the full-time role after Mike Gundy was fired after a 1-2 start to his 21st season in Stillwater. Doug Meacham took the reins as interim head coach, but has lost all eight games he’s coached.

After a 5-7 season in 2023 — his first with North Texas — Morris led the Mean Green to a Bowl appearance in 2024 and an impressive 10-1 record going into this weekend’s game against Temple. ESPN reported he will star with North Texas through the end of the 2025 campaign.

Morris will be tasked with turning around a team that has a 4-19 record over the last two seasons after the program had reached a bowl game in 18 consecutive seasons.

Notably, Morris became the offensive coordinator at Texas Tech in 2014 and led offenses with quarterback Patrick Mahomes to great success.

And this year, Morris’ North Texas leads the FBS in yards and points per game.

Oklahoma State’s administration is ready for the change next year after seemingly hitting a nadir in 2025.

“For many reasons, including the kind of person he is and the lasting relationships he builds with his players, Coach Morris is the perfect fit as the next leader of Cowboy Football,” Charles Weiberg, OSU athletic director, said in a statement Tuesday.

“The future is bright for OSU Football and I look forward to introducing him and his family to our team, our former players and all Cowboy fans.”
