Matt Freese is sticking with New York City FC for the long term.

The breakout star of the U.S. Men’s National Team’s run in the Gold Cup this summer and goalkeeper for the NYCFC signed a contract extension to keep him in the Big Apple through 2030.

Freese, 27, announced the news during the “Men in Blazers Live in New York” event being on Thursday night. It led the NYCFC fans in the audience at Terminal 5 to erupt in cheers.

“Very excited to announce that I signed a new contract that will run until the end of 2030,” he said on the stage.

Freese has developed into a star for NYCFC since his arrival before the 2023 season, appearing in 83 matches and making 275 saves with 20 clean sheets across all competitions. He even earned club MVP in 2024.

This season, he has helped NYCFC to 15 wins through MLS matches as the club sits in fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

“We’re thrilled to have secured Matt’s future with the Club through this contract extension,” sporting director David Lee said in a statement. “Over the past two seasons, he has not only established himself as one of MLS’ premier goalkeepers but also a distinguished role model on-and-off the field. His character, leadership, and professionalism set a strong foundation for the Club, and we believe he will remain a cornerstone of our team for many years to come.”

Freese played an integral role for the men’s national team, starting in all six of their Gold Cup matches — putting himself in the conversation for the starting job next summer for the World Cup. He recorded two shutouts before the Americans lost in the final to Mexico.

“This season, he has continued his remarkable growth and elevated his game with key contributions to one of the best defensive records in the League,” Lee said. “His consistency and composure earned him a well-deserved U.S. Men’s National Team call-up, reflecting his individual growth and the caliber of his performances for New York City. As Matt enters the prime of his career, we’re excited to see how he continues to develop and contribute to the successes for both club and country.”

In a team-produced video released on social media, Freese credited the roster that City has, along with the direction of Lee and head coach Pascal Jansen, as part of what made him want to stay in New York.
