A German woman has died after falling from a moving motorhome while on a family holiday to Spain after she mistook the exit for the toilet door.

The tragic incident took place near Rotgla i Corbera in the province of Valencia last Thursday at around 5:30 am, according to Spain’s Civil Guard.

The unnamed 84-year-old was reportedly on her way to Denia with her daughter in law, who was driving the vehicle.

While the incident is currently being investigated, authorities believe it was most likely an accident. Police said the pensioner may have confused the door of the motorhome with the toilet door.

According to Spanish news outlet Telecinco, a truck driver witnessed the horrific scene, and described how he saw the right-hand side door of the motorhome swing open and just seconds later, a body was projected out and rolled onto the road.

In that moment, another vehicle driving past hit the woman, who was killed instantly.

The motorhome reportedly continued moving, but local police found the driver at a service station 8.5 kilometres form the scene of the accident.

The driver had stopped at a petrol station after she realised her mother-in-law had vanished from the vehicle.

She then reportedly asked a worker for help, and explained that she had heard a loud bang come from the back of the vehicle before realising her travel companion was no longer there

According to Telecinco, the woman’s daughter in law, who owns the vehicle, has not been charged with a crime.

Meanwhile, investigators have ruled out the prospects of there having been a third person aboard the vehicle.
