Michael Irvin believes ESPN gave Rueben Bain Jr. the short end of the stick.
The Cowboys and University of Miami legend ripped his former employer for what he deemed a “classless” maneuver during the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft last Thursday by showing his much-discussed short arm length in an info bar after the Buccaneers selected him with the No. 15 pick.
ESPN flashed on screen during Bain’s walk from the green room to the stage that he had the “shortest by 1st-Rd edge rusher since 2003″, per Awful Announcing.
“I’m going to say this,” Irvin said on “Outspoken with Dan Sileo” on Sunday, “these mother brothers out there, they don’t ever stop trying to somehow, someway assault us. What I watched ESPN do was an assault on a young man from Miami and it was absolutely classless and uncalled for.
“When Rueben Bain’s name got called, this is one of the greatest moments of your life. You’re going to look back at this tape all the time an watch that year you got drafted. And ESPN, these mother — When he walking, Dan, did you see the info bar? It has his arm length. I said, ‘Are you s–tting me? .. You’ supposed to have a highlight here, not a lowlight. Not something that everybody’s been talking about that’s made this man value fall down. You saw what him and his family was going through. I was like, ‘Oh, my God, man.’ That’s insane, that was just incredible and I thought it was so classless of them to do that.”
While Irvin may have preferred if ESPN framed the pick with orange-and-green glasses, the reality is that Bain’s short arm length factored heavily into his draft stock.
On pure production alone, Bain worked his way into the first round by tallying 9 1/2 sacks this past season for the Hurricanes and winning ACC Defensive Player of the Year honors.
Teams draft on projections, though, and it’s a red flag when players have arms measuring less than 33 inches, according to NFL.com.
Tennessee coach Robert Saleh seemingly referenced the issues that Bain could encounter in the NFL when discussing the star pass rusher at the NFL Combine.
“(Bain’s) tape is undeniable,” Saleh said, per NFL.com. “His football IQ is off the charts. There are certain things he’ll have to adjust to, but he’s a guy that should have a lot of success in the league.”
Bain perhaps would have been in the mix to go higher if he had longer arms, which is likely why ESPN referenced that point after the Buccaneers took him with the 15th pick.
To leave that out of the discussion would have been doing viewers a disservice, the same way his draft discussion included reports of the 2024 fatal car accident in which he was the driver.
Bain was cited for careless driving in the accident that killed one individual.
Irvin, who went viral for his sideline theatrics during Miami’s run to the CFP Championship Game, wanted the focus on Bain’s production.
“How many sacks he has? You talk about led his team to a championship game?” Irvin said. “Any positive thing supposed to go into that info bar as he walks into the next phase of his life and it’s supposed to be a happy moment and ESPN put up some — it was garbage to me.”

“With my mentality, it’s what I can do,” Bain said of helping the Buccaneers’ defense. “That’s how I think about myself. I know I’m the best in the country. I’m going to show it.”
