France superstar forward Kylian Mbappe probably cared more about Lionel Messi’s goal total in the FIFA World Cup Final on Sunday than the game’s actual outcome.
That is because Mbappe’s 10 goals in this year’s World Cup put him in position to win the Golden Boot, so long as Messi (who had eight goals heading into the World Cup Final against Spain) didn’t score twice.
Messi didn’t find the back of the net in his team’s 1-0 loss to Spain, which probably appeased the French star.
Mbappe’s girlfriend, actress Ester Exposito, did care about the World Cup Final’s outcome, as she’s from Spain. And she made her excitement about her home country’s World Cup win clear with an Instagram story post on Sunday.
She posted a screenshot of what looked to be a FaceTime with two friends moments after the World Cup Final. They looked to be celebrating in the street while an exalted Exposito could be seen smiling in the screen’s bottom-right corner.
“❤️,” was the post’s simple caption, conveying the joy Exposito felt in that moment.
Exposito had a conflicting rooting interest when her home country and Mbappe’s France faced each other in the World Cup Semifinal last week.
She took a diplomatic stance and didn’t answer which of these teams she thought would win the World Cup, saying, “That’s a difficult choice for me.”
Of course, Spain won that game 2-0, which set them up to face Argentina in the World Cup Final. Exposito had no such conflicting interests for that game and was therefore able to show her excitement for Spain on social media.
Perhaps Mbappe did care about the World Cup Final’s outcome, as he played with Messi at Paris Saint-Germain a few years ago. But one would imagine he’s still brooding over his team’s crushing loss to the eventual world champions.
