Justin Fields’ concussion adds insult to injury during woeful Jets showing

Week 1 was the best of Justin Fields.

Week 2 wasn’t close to that.

Perhaps it was the level of the opponent, or a smart team adjusting to what Fields put on film against the Steelers, or this was just a natural regression.

But it wasn’t pretty.

Fields was completely ineffective in the ugly 30-10 Jets loss to the Bills, and his status moving forward is uncertain after suffering a concussion early in the fourth quarter.

Obviously, this isn’t what the Jets envisioned for their new starting quarterback Sunday.

He was only 3-for-11 passing for 27 yards, lost a fumble on a quarterback keeper and led the Jets to just a field goal over three quarters.

There were plenty of missed throws, like the one to Garrett Wilson on the opening drive, and his legs weren’t as big of a factor against the Bills as they were in the narrow loss to the Steelers a week earlier.

“I just thought we didn’t get in a rhythm on offense. It was hard on all of us out there,” Wilson said. “We didn’t do a good job of helping him. I know I didn’t. I put one on the ground today. We all got to do our part, and it starts with the receivers room making plays and getting this thing rolling as soon as we get out on the field.”

Coach Aaron Glenn didn’t have much to offer on Fields’ performance, saying he has to watch the film.

Asked his thoughts on the passing game, he said: “What’s my view of it? It wasn’t good.”

In fairness to the quarterback, nobody performed well on offense.

The offensive line struggled to create holes before Buffalo pulled some of its starters.

The Bills, gashed for 238 rushing yards in Week 1 by the Ravens, seemed determined to force the Jets to throw.

And Fields couldn’t make them pay.

“Whatever they did last week, they fixed their problems,” Glenn said of the Bills. “And that’s what we have to do, and that’s what it comes down to. That’s what this league is.”

An already poor day for Fields took an even worse turn early in the fourth quarter.

After he was sacked by Joey Bosa, Fields was checked into the injury tent on the Jets sideline.

He later emerged with a towel over his head and walked into the locker room.

He may have more time than usual to think about this game.
