It couldn't be more clear Mets need to right this ship -- and fast

CHICAGO — It was twenty-something years ago when I joined a spectacularly unsuccessful Mets trip in progress, and future Hall of Famer Mike Piazza looked at me and quipped: “Oh, I see you’ve hitched a ride on the Titanic.”

I don’t recall the exact circumstances of that failing Mets team, but no way was it worse than what’s going on with this $365 million Mets club right now. These guys are taking on water, and fast, and they need about 26 life preservers — more including the guys on the injured list, and Jorge Polanco, who added wrist sprain to his flaring Achilles, may soon join Juan Soto and Co. there.

The Mets’ ninth straight defeat Friday at Wrigley Field, the one that made it their longest losing streak since 2004, felt over by the time Cubs rookie Moises Ballesteros’ three-run homer off Kodai Senga settled in the left field basket about 15 minutes into the 12-4 Mets loss.

“We have got to be able to put a consistent game here where we’re clicking our best, with starters, playing defense, offensively,” Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. “That has got to start.”
