LAKELAND, Fla. — Prior to a recent road game, Spencer Jones stood behind the batting cage during batting practice, deep in conversation with hitting coach James Rowson.

Surely, one of the team’s top prospects and the hitting coach were talking about the finer points of his swing or approach.

Asked about the conversation, Jones said they were chatting about something else entirely.

“We were talking yacht rock,’’ Jones said with a laugh recently, referring to the easy-listening music genre that was being played in the stadium at the time. “I wasn’t sure who sang the song that was on.”
