A new documentary series exploring the life and career of prolific film director Martin Scorsese is almost here.

“Mr. Scorsese,” from director Rebecca Miller, premieres on Apple TV tomorrow, Oct. 17, following its world premiere at the New York Film Festival earlier this month.

Per Apple TV, the series is “a film portrait of a man through the lens of his work, exploring the many facets of a visionary who redefined filmmaking.” Miller had exclusive and unrestricted access to Scorsese’s private archives and interviewed a number of frequent collaborators, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro, for the project.

Originally intended to be a feature-length documentary, “Mr. Scorsese” was eventually expanded into a five-part docuseries. It “examines how his own colorful life experiences informed his artistic vision as each film he made stunned the world with originality” and touches on the themes that are often present in Scorsese’s work, like the concept of good and evil and the nature of humankind.

Structured chronologically, “Mr. Scorsese” begins during the director’s New York University days and continues all the way through the present, hitting all of his 26 feature films along the way — from college shorts and “Who’s That Knocking At My Door” to “Mean Streets,” “Raging Bull,” and “Taxi Driver,” continuing onto “Goodfellas,” “The Departed,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” and his most recent feature, “Killers of the Flower Moon.”

‘Mr. Scorsese’ release date

“Mr. Scorsese” begins streaming Friday, Oct. 17, only on Apple TV. All five episodes will be available to stream at once.

Apple TV+ does tend to drop new movies and shows earlier, though, so while Oct. 17 is the official release date, you may be able to watch “Mr. Scorsese” as early as 9 p.m. ET tonight, Oct. 16.

How to watch ‘Mr. Scorsese’ for free

“Mr. Scorsese” is being released exclusively on Apple TV, so you’ll need an Apple TV subscription to watch the new movie.

Apple TV has just one ad-free plan, which costs $12.99/month, but new subscribers can take advantage of a seven-day free trial. If you choose to subscribe via Prime Video, you can also try the service for free before payment begins.

Who appears in the ‘Mr. Scorsese’ documentary?

In addition to Scorsese himself, a number of friends and family members were interviewed for this project. This includes his children, wife Helen Morris, and some close childhood friends.

Additionally, creative collaborators Robert De Niro, Daniel Day-Lewis, Leonardo DiCaprio, Mick Jagger, Robbie Robertson, film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, Steven Spielberg, Sharon Stone, Jodie Foster, Paul Schrader, Margot Robbie, Cate Blanchett, screenwriter Jay Cocks, and cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto appear throughout the five episodes.

‘Mr. Scorsese’ episode guide

As noted above, all five episodes of “Mr. Scorsese” will become available at once.

  • Part 1: Stranger in a Strange Land – “The child of immigrants, young Scorsese is shaped by the Catholic Church and the violent streets around him, with cinema as his escape.”
  • Part 2: All This Filming Isn’t Healthy – “Scorsese partners with Robert De Niro and becomes a definitive cinematic voice of the 1970s — while personal struggles bring him to the brink.”
  • Part 3: Saint/Sinner – “After a rebirth with ‘Raging Bull’ and then a flop with ‘The King of Comedy’, Scorsese learns to work small again and pursues a passion project.”
  • Part 4: Total Cinema – “Following a turbulent period of international controversy, Scorsese achieves massive success and a new vision of cinema in ‘Goodfellas’.”
  • Part 5: Method Director – “As a partnership with Leonardo DiCaprio brings Scorsese’s career to new heights, he continues to reinvent himself as a filmmaker and a man.”
