The head of Audi Italy has died after plunging 700ft from a mountain while climbing alone in the Alps.

Fabrizio Longo, the director of Audi Italia, was hiking at the Cima Payer in the Adamello mountain on Saturday when he fell.

The 62-year-old, who was an expert climber, was reportedly equipped with steel cables, ladders and other aids along his route.

However, a helicopter team located his body roughly 700ft inside a gorge after a fellow climber witnessed him falling and called emergency services.

The Prosecutor’s Office will now investigate his death and a date for the funeral will be set after Longo’s body is released to his family.

In 2013, he was appointed director of Audi Italy, where he promoted various initiatives linked to the region, including the mountainous region Dolomites.

He worked to enhance the Audi brand by linking it to the world of the mountains throughout his career.
