Carmen Bricillo quoted “The Godfather,” but the Giants don’t need to make him an offer that he can’t refuse to stay on as offensive line coach.
There is a groundswell of support within the fan base to keep Bricillo as a member of the next coaching staff because the offensive line finally is playing at an above-average level (ranked No. 12 by Pro Football Focus) for the first time in a decade.
“I’m flattered by that — you try to do a good job,” Bricillo said before Friday’s practice. “It’s a results-oriented business. You go into it knowing it full well. In ‘Godfather II,’ Hyman Roth [said], ‘It’s the business we choose.’ I serve at the pleasure of ownership, the general manager and the head coach. If they want me here, they’ve got me.”
Bricillo is under contract for 2026, he confirmed.
The same is believed to be true for most of the staff originally assembled by fired head coach Brian Daboll.
“I was just talking to one of my players: One way or another, we’ll be involved with football somehow, some way,” Bricillo said. “Whether it’s here with the Giants or at our next stop.”
If he does not return, quarterbacks coach Shea Tierney — Daboll’s right-hand man — said he won’t feel cheated out of developing rookie Jaxson Dart after being part of the hard part of identifying a franchise quarterback.
“You try to put [your future] on the back burner and come Monday you deal with it and play the waiting game,” Tierney said. “Nothing in this business is ever guaranteed. Regardless of what happens, I’ll be very grateful for this year. It was a very good experience to work with a rookie and install a system from the ground up. You can’t skip this part, so there are things you remind yourself of.”
Position coaches have been told to take a couple of weeks off while the coaching search is conducted.
“I’ve been in this league long enough and made a name for myself that it’s going to be OK,” defensive line coach Andre Patterson said. “I don’t need to go beat the bushes. If it’s meant for me to coach somewhere else, they’ll reach out to me. If the Giants want me to stay, they’ll reach out to me. My biggest stress is my players. It not only changes for us, it changes for them, too. Whatever kind of scheme the new coaches bring in here, or whatever they decide to do, could change how they see the men in my room.”
CB Cor’Dale Flott (knee), S Jevon Holland (knee/concussion), TE Theo Johnson (illness) OT Evan Neal (neck), WR Wan’Dale Robinson (rib) and DT Rakeem Nunez-Roches (ankle/toe) were ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Cowboys.
Flott, Neal, Robinson and Nunez-Roches are free agents.
WR Jalin Hyatt (illness) is questionable.
DT Dexter Lawrence (illness) did not practice but is expected to play.
LB Abdul Carter (illness) was upgraded to limited participation and is expected to play.
The Giants did not return OL Josh Ezeudu before his three-week return-to-practice window expired.
Ezeudu wound up missing the entire season with a calf strain late in the preseason and was ready to go only a few weeks into the season.
“He did a great job in the practices,” interim head coach Mike Kafka said. “It just ended up being just the numbers. Just where our roster was at, some of the injuries and stuff and prioritizing maybe some position groups over others.”
