Ford Motor is recalling more than 850,000 US vehicles due to a fuel pump failure, which could cause the engine to stall and increase the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Thursday.

The recall impacts certain 2021-2023 Bronco, Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, F-250 SD, F-350 SD, 5-450 SD, F-550 SD, 2021-2022 Lincoln Navigator, Mustang, F-150 and 2022 Expedition vehicles.

A fuel pump defect could stifle fuel delivery to the engine in affected vehicles, potentially causing an engine stall while driving.

Ford said an estimated 10% of the 850,318 vehicles included in the recall have the defect.

The automaker received at least six consumer complaints related to the defect, and is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the fuel pump failure.

Letters notifying vehicle owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed July 14.

Second letters will be sent once there is a remedy.

Drivers may notice a check engine light, weaker engine power or poor engine performance, including misfiring or running rough, ahead of the fuel pump failure.

The defect is more likely to occur in warm weather conditions with hot fuel in the tank, or when fuel levels are low, the automaker said.
