Five things that ruined Brian Daboll’s failed Giants tenure

The Giants fired Brian Daboll on Monday.

Here are five things that doomed his coaching tenure:

Inconsistent QB play

Mostly with Daniel Jones, but with Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito and Russell Wilson as well, the Giants had brutal QB play under Daboll, a supposed QB-whisperer.

He finally got his guy with Jaxson Dart, and though Dart has impressed, Daboll’s reckless play calling eventually got Dart hurt.

And still, there was not enough winning.

Late-game collapses

The Giants have lost four games this year after leading by 10 points.

It took a comedy of errors and miscues each time to lose.

In-game decision-making

His decisions can certainly be questioned at the end of multiple late-game collapses this year.

Most recently, taking three points to go up 20-10 in the beginning of the fourth quarter instead of trying to score a touchdown on a potential fourth-and-goal from inside the 1-yard line against the Bears comes to mind.

Icy relations with staff

Daboll and his first defensive coordinator, Wink Martindale, had a falling out and they parted ways after two years together.

Martindale’s replacement, Shane Bowen, has been a disaster.

Daboll also stripped offensive coordinator Mike Kafka of play-caller duties before giving them back.

Special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey was fired and Michael Ghobrial was brought in last year.

A plethora of position coaches were replaced.

And the results largely stayed the same.

Inability to stop seasons from spiraling

When things got bad the past three years, they pretty much only ever got worse and worse.

That led to fan unrest, empty stadiums, or worse — MetLife Stadium being taken over by opposing fans.
