England midfielder Jordan Henderson will miss the rest of the World Cup after suffering a severe wrist fracture that will require surgery in post-match celebrations.

Henderson landed awkwardly as he slipped while attempting to climb a dasher board after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on Sunday night.

The moment came amidst the English fans serenading their team with Oasis’ “Wonderwall,” which has become an unofficial anthem for the English squad.

England captain Harry Kane was the first to leap the wall, which looked to be about four feet high. Henderson followed, but appeared to lose his grip. Kane immediately noticed that Henderson was in pain and motioned medical personnel over to the scene.

The Brentford midfielder left the field on a stretcher and received oxygen, later being transported to a hospital in Mexico City. He did not return to Kansas City, where England’s training base is located, with the rest of the team following the celebrations.

Henderson, a former captain for Liverpool, was an unused substitute against Mexico.

“I’m sad because Jordan injured his wrist. It’s quite serious,” England manager Thomas Tuchel said post-match.

“He’s in hospital. It doesn’t fit with the rest of the evening. I don’t know the procedure.”

Henderson was shown a yellow card on the bench towards the end of the match for apparently involving himself in a clash between teammate Jude Bellingham and Mexico’s Johan Vasquez.

Henderson was a substitute in a group stage match against Panama, making him England’s first player to appear in four World Cups.

England will be without one of their midfielders for their quarterfinal matchup against Erling Haaland and Norway on Saturday at 5 pm ET in Miami.
