Clay Holmes recently learned he won’t need surgery as there was no displacement with his fractured fibula, according to sources, and that’s great news for his long-term health, which benefits both him and the Mets.
One tiny downside to the preferred natural healing: It might take a bit longer. The latest guess for Holmes’ return is the beginning of August, which coincides with the Aug. 3 trade deadline, making a deal tricky.
Prime trade candidate Freddy Peralta told The Athletic he’d like to remain with the Mets through the year. Of course, even if Peralta wasn’t the most positive man in MLB (he is), there’s no upside to saying the opposite now.
No matter his public stance, it actually behooves him to be traded as 1.) it would eliminate any possibility of a qualifying offer (assuming there’s still a QO in a new CBA). 2.) He’d presumably go to a better team, and 3.) it might be a team that’s more likely to consider the deal for closer to the “seven or eight” years he told The Post he seeks.
